Cindy Horne
Patient Cindy Horne was a 46 year old researcher at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. She enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities that included exploring local trails. These hobbies naturally led her into contact with a multitude of insect species, some of which she kept in the event of a problem. Mrs. Horne fell ill on August 30, 2014 and admitted herself to the hospital the following day. She was treated with antibiotics and fluids for her shivering and fever yet awoke the next day with severe body aches and another fever which did not respond to treatment. She slipped into a coma and eventually succumbed to the infection on September 4, 2014. Blood tests did indicate the presence of an unknown agent.
